The International Day of the Girl: the task before us
Commemorating this year’s international day of the girl(IDG), forher thought of looking at a different angle in giving girls assurance that they can become whatever they set their mind on becoming.
In line with this year’s theme: “OUR TIME IS NOW, OUR RIGHTS, OUR FUTURE”, we shared knowledge with the girls of Adiagha Obong Secondary school, Eniong Offot in Uyo on the need to use the digital space for their good. The teaching started with questions about what they do with their phones when they go on holidays and what they intend to study at college – where they see themselves in 5 to 10 years. So many responses sufficed. We were able to convince them that the tech space that was once feared is now saturated by ladies, and the need for more girls to control that niche.
The team explained in detail what the digital space has contributed to the lives of other successful women in society and why it should not just be about movies, friendship, games, and the like.
The striking and most important news was that IT IS THEIR TIME to decide what their future will be, and how they will want their male counterpart to compete with them favourably and not based on superiority or self-pity.
We must continue to dish out hope, and preach excellence and competence amongst girls in all nooks and crannies of the world. This will ensure that we don’t just celebrate this yearly ritual, but, we redirect focus and reshape destinies.
ONE GIRL, MANY POSSIBILITIES.
